OpenAI Dots: Should SMEs Try Them Yet?

Open AI Dots

This week Open AI has released dots, always-on agents connected through ChatGPT that can run through tasks while you continue with your day. We have started trialing them and believe most SMEs should run a careful pilot before committing, especially since the UK access currently sits behind the most expensive ChatGPT Business seat.

Your first dot comes at no extra cost with a Business Premium seat, the main route to dots in the UK at launch. It is available around the clock to talk, help you think and keep track of what matters to you. OpenAI have also extended its allowance for deeper work for the first month and plan to let you add more dots or scale each one's speed and monthly workload later.

If your team already pay for ChatGPT and someone has asked whether dots justify the upgrade, this guide is for you. We cover what dots do, what they cost in the UK and how to test one safely.

What Are OpenAI Dots?

Dots are autonomous AI assistants powered by the OpenAI GPT-6 Astra model. According to OpenAI's launch announcement, each dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, connects to more than 4,000 apps and learns from your feedback over time.

A chatbot waits for your next prompt. A dot keeps working towards a goal in the background around the clock. OpenAI say the best results arrive 'sometimes before you even think to ask'.

How OpenAI dots decide when to act

Each dot works on a separate cloud computer, away from your own devices. Custom Rules set how it behaves for each type of action. According to the OpenAI getting started guide, a dot can act without asking, act only if pre-approved, ask before acting or hand the task back to you.

Think of a Dot as a Digital PA

In our view, a dot works best as a personal assistant for repeatable, low-risk tasks. You brief it the way you would brief a PA: describe the job and share the details it needs, whether that means reviewing your calendar, researching a topic or reminding you about something later.

Like a good PA, it takes follow-up instructions. You reply in the conversation to add information or change the request. You can also attach a file or photo with the + button.

Checking its work is simple, your dot's profile in the desktop app lists tasks as in progress, scheduled or completed. You can also open its cloud computer to watch or step in.

Recurring reports make a good first brief, when we helped a boutique financial consultancy automate client reporting, monthly reporting cycles fell from three days to under four hours. A dot could take on similar work, provided a person checks the output.

UK Access to OpenAI Dots Runs Through Business Premium

The OpenAI help center confirms that dots are rolling out to Pro subscribers in markets excluding the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the UK. Business Premium users get dots across all supported ChatGPT regions, which includes the UK. OpenAI have not given a reason for the Pro exclusion or a date for UK access.

What OpenAI dots cost

OpenAI price Premium seats at $100 per user per month on annual billing or $125 on monthly billing. Your first dot comes with the Premium seat at no extra cost, along with an allowance for deeper work.

OpenAI have extended that allowance for the first month after launch, which in our view may flatter early results. OpenAI say you will be able to add more dots later, although prices remain unpublished. Our analysis of AI agent costs for SMEs shows why agent bills behave differently to chatbot subscriptions.

Agent Mistakes Cost More Than Chatbot Mistakes

An agent that acts carries a different risk to a chatbot that answers, a wrong answer wastes a few minutes, a wrong action can send an email or share a file with the wrong person.

OpenAI have built in several safeguards, Axios report that dots draft messages by default without sending them and have limited authority over financial transactions.

Our explainer on AI agent security and the Hugging Face breach shows why these controls matter. Exposed credentials and broad permissions let OpenAI's own test agents breach Hugging Face systems in July, the same failures apply to all businesses that connect an agent to their apps.

OpenAI dots keep Business data out of training

On ChatGPT Business, OpenAI do not use your data to train their models by default. Their privacy and safety FAQs confirm that dots do not keep credentials, images or screenshots in their context.

Your dot can also receive memories and recent context from your ChatGPT account. Its conversations can feed back into ChatGPT memory as well, if your staff handle several clients, set clear rules on what a dot can see.

Our View: Pilot One Dot Before You Commit

Most SMEs should run one careful pilot of OpenAI dots before rolling them out across the team, the technology is new and pricing for extra dots remains unknown. This advice suits teams at the Curious stage, who want to see what AI can do in their own workflow.

A sensible pilot starts with one Premium seat for the person who owns a repeatable, low-risk workflow. In an accountancy practice, that might mean drafting reminders for missing client documents, with a person pressing send.

Set Custom Rules so the dot asks before it sends, pays or deletes anything. Name one person to review its output each week, then judge the results once the extended allowance ends.

Before you connect any apps, agree what the dot may access. Our AI policy guide covers the basics every SME needs in place, it also pays to map the process first, as our piece on AI workflow redesign explains, since an agent will repeat a messy process faithfully.

Why not wait for OpenAI dots to mature?

Waiting has a fair case. Pro access may reach the UK later and early problems will surface in other businesses first. If you handle sensitive client data, work in a regulated sector or have no AI policy yet, we agree that you should wait.

For everyone else, a small pilot costs one seat and teaches lessons no launch article can. The rules, review habits and process maps you build now carry over to any agent you adopt later, whether that is a dot or a rival such as Claude Cowork. Our ChatGPT Work vs Claude Cowork comparison explains how to choose between them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are OpenAI dots available in the UK?

Yes, through ChatGPT Business Premium seats and as an admin-enabled beta on Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare plans. Pro subscribers in the UK, EEA and Switzerland cannot use dots at launch.

How much do OpenAI dots cost?

The first dot comes with a ChatGPT Business Premium seat, which OpenAI price at $100 per user per month on annual billing or $125 monthly. OpenAI have not yet priced extra dots.

Are OpenAI dots safe for business data?

On Business plans, OpenAI do not train on your data by default and credentials stay hidden from the model. Dots can still make mistakes, which is why Custom Rules and human review matter.
