Grok vs ChatGPT for Business: Cheaper Tokens, Dearer Tasks

Grok vs ChatGPT for business has a short answer for most SMEs. Make ChatGPT your default tool and give Grok one defined job, such as social listening. If your team is still deciding which AI tool to approve, that is our view after weighing price, evidence and regulatory record.
Staff will not wait for that decision. Anyone with an X account can open Grok in seconds, which makes shadow AI a live risk before you choose a vendor.
Grok vs ChatGPT for Business: Capability Is Now Level
Artificial Analysis scored Grok 4.6 at 61 on its Intelligence Index in August, in line with GPT-5.6 Sol. Both vendors have shipped new flagships since then: DataNorth reports Grok 4.7 on 21 September; OpenAI's announcement dates GPT-6 Sol and Luna to 22 September. That pace makes any score older than a month a historical reading.
In our view workflow now separates the two tools. Grok sits inside X and reads live posts natively, which suits trend monitoring and social listening. We find ChatGPT better suited to structured, client-facing documents.
Grok vs ChatGPT for Business: Match the Tool to the Task
Picture the marketing manager at a 30-person retailer checking at nine in the morning how a product launch is landing on X. Grok reads those posts directly. Now picture the operations manager at the same firm summarising a supplier contract, where consistent structure matters more than freshness.
A team that never works on X gets little from Grok beyond its price. The next section shows why that price needs a second look.
We would still name ChatGPT as the default for a mixed team because one approved tool is easier to govern than two. If Claude is also on your shortlist, our comparison of Claude and ChatGPT for business covers that choice.
Grok's Lower Token Price Hides a Higher Task Cost
Price makes the strongest case for Grok. MorphLLM lists Grok 4.7 at $2 per million input tokens and $6 per million output tokens, against $2 and $10 for GPT-6 Sol. The same source puts SuperGrok at $30 a month and ChatGPT Plus at $20.
For Grok vs ChatGPT for business, cost per task tells a different story. DataNorth reports Artificial Analysis measurements that put a Grok 4.7 task at about $3.74 against about $1.99 on GPT-5.6 Sol, because Grok 4.7 writes far more output tokens. That is nearly twice the cost per task despite the cheaper rate.
The same report counts roughly 81,000 output tokens per task for Grok 4.7 against about 36,000 for Grok 4.6. A lower rate multiplied by a longer answer can still produce a higher bill.
The source tested GPT-5.6 Sol. Run GPT-6 Sol on your own tasks before you trust the gap.
Seats add to the bill. Our dots review found that UK access needs the most expensive ChatGPT Business seat. Usage-based bills also climb quickly, as our piece on AI agent costs shows.
Grok Carries a Live Regulatory Question
Ofcom opened a formal investigation into X on 12 January after reports that users were using Grok to create sexualised images of real people, including children. In its 14 October update the regulator narrowed the probe to illegal content and complaints duties.
The same update records that SpaceXAI have restricted UK users from viewing, generating or sharing pornographic content through Grok's image tools. Ofcom say they will keep monitoring those restrictions while the investigation continues.
Adoption data points the same way. Reuters found that only three of more than 400 vendor-named examples in the 2025 federal AI inventory involve xAI or Grok, against 234 for OpenAI-based technology. The same report cites Netskope data putting Grok at 2 of every 1,000 enterprise users, down from a peak of 5.
In our view those figures signal buyer caution about the vendor and tell you little about the model.
A Grok vs ChatGPT for business decision should still never rest on blind trust in either tool. Verify any output that reaches a client. Then name the approved tools and the data each may handle in an AI policy.
Test Both Tools on Your Own Work First
The fair objection is that Grok improves quickly. We agree. That argues for a quarterly retest on your own tasks and a written record of what changed.
Pick three to five real tasks, such as a client email, a supplier report summary, a spreadsheet clean-up and a social trend brief. Run each through both tools and record three measures: the cost of the finished task, the minutes your team spends editing and the errors a colleague finds. Keep the results on one sheet so the decision rests on evidence you own.
Choose the default first. Then decide whether Grok's social listening job justifies a second seat and a second line in your AI policy.
We sell neither tool. As independent advisors we back whichever fits your processes. Jon Rew, Managing Director at Scimitar Sports, said the report from our AI Readiness Assessment 'highlighted things that were likely costing us money'.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Grok better than ChatGPT for business?
For most SMEs ChatGPT is the safer default. Grok earns a place where live X data matters, such as social listening. Choose by task first, then test the cost of a finished task on your own work.
Is Grok cheaper than ChatGPT?
Per token it is cheaper. Per task it was not in the test we found, with DataNorth reporting about $3.74 for a Grok 4.7 task against about $1.99 for GPT-5.6 Sol. MorphLLM lists SuperGrok at $30 a month against $20 for ChatGPT Plus.
Is Grok safe for business use?
It can be with controls. Ofcom's update shows its investigation into X over Grok continuing. Verify outputs before they reach clients and name approved tools in your AI policy.
