Claude Sonnet 5.5: What It Means for Your Business

Claude Update

Claude Sonnet 5.5 is the new everyday version of Claude, the AI assistant made by Anthropic. In our view, it puts work that once needed Claude's premium version within reach of most SMEs, at a lower cost.

If your team already use Claude or someone has asked whether now the time is to try it, this guide is for you. We cover what changed, what it means for day-to-day work and how to test it on your own tasks.

What Is Claude Sonnet 5.5?

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September 2026. Claude comes in different versions. Opus is the most powerful and costs the most, while Sonnet is the everyday version most businesses use.

According to Anthropic's launch announcement, the new version works more than 30% faster than the one before. It also reaches an answer in fewer steps, which makes each job cheaper to run.

How Claude Sonnet 5.5 Compares With Opus

In Anthropic's own tests, Sonnet 5.5 performed about as well as Opus on everyday office work such as reports, research and analysis. For businesses that build Claude into their own systems, Sonnet costs half as much as Opus to use.

Anthropic remain clear that Opus is the stronger choice for complex, open-ended work that needs careful judgement. For most daily tasks, though, the gap has closed.

In our view, Opus still earns its higher cost for work such as reviewing complex contracts or planning a long, multi-stage project. In those cases, a wrong judgement costs far more than the saving.

Everyday Work Gets Faster and Cheaper

In our view, the upgrade matters most for work that repeats and follows a clear pattern. Think of drafting proposals, summarising meeting notes, answering routine customer emails or pulling figures into a monthly report.

Reporting makes a good example. When we helped a boutique financial consultancy automate client reporting, monthly reporting cycles fell from three days to under four hours. A faster, cheaper Claude makes that kind of project easier to justify, although the gains still depend on clean data and a clear process.

Lower Running Costs Open Up More Jobs

AI assistants that carry out tasks on their own, often called AI agents, cost money every time they work. Our analysis of AI agent costs for SMEs shows how quickly those bills can add up.

A version that finishes the same job in fewer steps brings that bill down. As a result, tasks that did not make financial sense six months ago may now pay for themselves.

Claude Sonnet 5.5 Adds Stronger Safety Protections

Anthropic say this is the first Sonnet version to carry safeguards against misuse in cyber attacks comparable to those on Opus. That matters more as businesses connect AI assistants to their email, files and finance systems.

Our explainer on AI agent security and the Hugging Face breach shows why these controls count. An assistant with broad access can do real damage if something goes wrong.

Rivals are taking the same issue seriously. In the same week, OpenAI held back a new model after testing showed it sometimes went beyond what users had authorised, according to The Register.

Our View: Test Claude Sonnet 5.5 on One Real Task

If your team already use Claude for everyday work, switching to Sonnet 5.5 makes sense. If you pay for Opus to handle routine tasks, run the same job through both versions and compare the results and the cost side by side.

This advice suits teams at the Curious stage of the AI confidence journey, who want to see what AI can do in their own workflow. Pick one repeatable task, run it for two weeks and name one person to check every output.

In an accountancy practice, that might mean drafting reminders for missing client documents, with a person pressing send. In a sales team, it might mean turning call notes into a follow-up email for someone to review.

Before you connect Claude to any business systems, agree what it may access. Our AI policy guide covers the basics every SME needs in place.

Why Not Stick With What You Have?

Staying put has a fair case. A new version will not fix a broken process. Early problems also tend to surface in other businesses first.

If you have no AI policy yet, we agree that you should sort that out before changing anything.

For everyone else, a side-by-side test on one task costs very little and shows whether the new version earns its place. If you are still choosing a platform, our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison explains how to decide.
