What Changed: Matching Seat Prices and Minimums

Anthropic's Team plan now needs two members, with Standard seats at $20 per member per month on annual billing ($25 monthly) and Premium seats at $100 ($125 monthly). OpenAI's ChatGPT Business matches those figures exactly and also requires two paid seats. Both vendors let you mix Standard and Premium seats in one workspace.

Both plans include the agent in question. Claude Team seats include Cowork and ChatGPT Business Standard seats include ChatGPT Work.

What Team Size Still Decides

Seat price has stopped separating the two products. Team size now affects three things: whether you need a team plan at all, how you split Standard and Premium seats and how far each plan can grow.

One Person: Individual Plans or a Two-Seat Workspace

A sole trader can reach both agents without a team plan. ChatGPT Work runs on Plus and Pro and Claude Cowork runs on Pro and Max. The team plans add admin tools, SSO and spend controls that individual plans lack.

Two to Fifteen People: Size the Seats, Not the Product

At this size the list price for any given seat mix is identical on both vendors' published rates. A three-person agency pays $60 a month on annual billing with either vendor. A twelve-person consultancy with two heavy users pays $400 a month on either plan for two Premium and ten Standard seats.

Premium seats also work alike on both sides. OpenAI give Premium five times Standard usage with no five-hour limit. Anthropic set Premium at 6.25 times the Pro session allowance against 1.25 times for Standard, which is also five times Standard.

The practical question is which of your people will use AI hardest. Run both products for two weeks on live work, check the usage dashboards and buy Premium only for those who hit limits.

Above Fifteen People: Watch the Ceilings

Claude Team supports up to 150 seats before an organisation moves to Enterprise. ChatGPT Business allows up to 200 paid seats for workspaces created after 24 August 2026. An SME planning to pass 150 users should factor in that gap or budget for an Enterprise negotiation.

On ChatGPT Business, seat reductions take effect only at the next billing cycle and unused seats are generally non-refundable. An annual plan can therefore leave you paying for leavers until renewal. Ask Anthropic how their annual Team plan handles reductions before you commit.

Why Team Size No Longer Favours Either Vendor

The obvious objection is that matching list prices can hide different value per seat. That objection is fair. The two vendors measure usage in different units, which no spreadsheet can reconcile.

A two-week pilot on live work settles it better. Once seats cost the same, the deciding factors sit elsewhere: where your people work, how you govern data and how quickly they adopt new tools.

Seat structures on both plans changed more than once in 2026. OpenAI added Premium seats in late August and raised the Business seat cap for new workspaces the same week. Anthropic lowered their Team minimum from five to two.
